Frankenweenie Deleted Scene: Victor Searches for Sparky

I recently bought ToonBoom for my home office, and that's allowed me to look through some old scenes of mine from older productions. This was a little scene where Victor searches for Sparky after he's run away. It's was designed to be a sweet, quite little moment between them, right before all hell breaks loose. I'm not sure, but I think this was cut from the final movie. I'll be posting more of this stuff in the coming weeks, hope you enjoy!

    1. Hi Krista,
I didn't board that scene, it was boarded by the amazing Dean Roberts (http://www.dean-roberts.co.uk) whom I worked with on Corpse Bride, Gnomeo and Juliette, and of course Frankenweenie.

    3. Hi Caroline,

I posted a link to Dean Roberts webpage in my reply to Krista. I only have samples of my work on this site:)

  2. Wasn't there other versions for some scenes, like the Dutch Day Mayhem and the moment with Victor, Bob, and Toshiaki at the Pet Cemetery where it used to be at Victor's house?

    1. Yes there were many, many different versions of the build up to, and the mayhem at Dutch Day. Mostly to streamline the action, and make things exciting. I did versions of Bob and Tosh meeting Victor at the pet Cemetery, at his house- I seem to remember doing at least five or six passes, I don't remember who did the final version used in the film though.

    2. One bit I remember from the old version of the Dutch day scene was a different moment with Victor's parents. Was that boarded and why was it changed for the final version?

    3. There were a lot of different versions of that last act, some where Victor was alone, and another where they start out together, but then Victor leaves, and others where they haven't seen each other all day. I think in the one that they are together was a little awkward, so we decided to break them up to give drive to the last act by cutting between the different threads, it gives momentum and really helps spike the suspense!

    4. Do you know who have boarded the versions above?

    5. I boarded a few versions, but it was either Rob Stephenhagen or Phil Vallentin who did the filmed version.

  3. Just to let you know, this scene is in the movie, just at a different rate. And was this supposed to be before or after the creation of the monsters? If this was before the monster creations, can you explain why it takes place after the creation of the monsters in the movie?

    1. Hi again Krista,

I think this was supposed to play after the creation of the Monsters, because I also boarded a scene where Victor sees the monster Sea-Monkeys as he leaves the cemetery, finds Bob hiding, and then Tosh shows up with the Dino-Turtle in hot pursuit. But then I also remember boarding a scene where Victor comes home to find his house empty and his parents gone, and that's where he finds Bob and Tosh and sees the Dino-Turtle for the first time. So I would have to say that the way these scenes all work together was something that was always in flux, being reconfigured this way and that, until we found a way to make it flow in the most exciting way.

    2. Thanks for explaining. I was asking about this because I also remember that this moment with Victor and Sparky happened before the monster creations.

    3. My pleasure Krista! It always makes me very happy when people care enough about our work to want to speak to us. It's very flattering, and I appreciate you taking the time to write:)

    4. About that scene you boarded about Victor coming home and finds his parents gone, you think you can find and post it at some point?

  4. Are there any plans for a Frankenweenie 2?

    1. Not that I know of. The film was not a financial success, so I doubt the studio is even considering it.

  5. Another thing I remember from the original draft was that there were like two scenes showing the town preparing for Dutch Day and there were others things involved, like a marching band and a oompa band. Do u mind telling why these scenes and ideas were cut?

  6. I have to ask. Can you find and post some of those versions of the last act with Victor's parents you did?
